Plastic waste from single-use bottles at Zayed Sports City is set to shrink by 219 tonnes in a typical year, thanks to new refilling stations installed by No More Bottles. Harnessing unique, next-gen, reverse osmosis technology, the stations currently installed offer cold or room-temperature purified water, and feature hands-free operation to visitors who bring their reusable bottle to the site to use for free. Fifteen units have been installed throughout the complex, with more to come.
The profoundly damaging environmental and societal impact of single-use plastic has recently been at the forefront of public awareness. Sportspeople, who require a litre of hydration for each hour of exercise, often rely on the convenience of single-use plastics, such as bottled water. When discarded, microparticles transfer to our water sources, and subsequently into the water, meat, and vegetables that we consume.
The dispensers serve the dual purpose of not only eliminating discarded bottles but ensuring water purity. They do this by filtering out up to 97% of contaminants, including toxic metals, pharmaceutical residues, micro-organisms, and microplastics. The result is water that is cleaner than the UAE’s most popular local and imported bottled brands.
“Positively impacting the community has been part of Zayed Sport City’s mission since its inception. Being able to provide the cleanest possible water to our athletes, free of charge, while also lessening the environmental impact of single-use plastics, is an excellent achievement for all. We are very excited to be leading the way in individual and societal health within the UAE through this partnership with No More Bottles,” noted Saif Al Mehairbi, Chairman of Zayed Sports City.
No More Bottles spokesperson Sandy Muirhead said: “Our goal is to help Zayed Sports City be part of the solution to tackling the menace of single-use plastics. We pride ourselves on offering premium solutions to boost the water quality and contribute to the UAE population rethinking how they drink, at home, work and play.”
