The British Council, co-owner of IELTS, the global English Language proficiency test, is offering 10 students prize money worth £3,000 (AED 14,500) each to help those planning to join the Autumn/Winter 2020, and early 2021 intakes at universities in the UAE or abroad.

To be in with a chance of winning the IELTS prize, all students need to do is submit their details into the online application form and tell the British Council in 500 words why they would like to win and where they plan to study. Any student planning to study in the next academic year and who has taken an IELTS test between January 2019 and February 2020 is eligible to enter.

The high stakes IELTS certificate is recognised as evidence of proficiency in English by more than 10,000 organizations worldwide. Through initiatives like this, the British Council aims to help students fulfil their aspirations for undergraduate or postgraduate study at any University that accepts IELTS as part of its admission criteria.

In the UAE outbound student mobility is growing fast, with the number of Emirati students seeking international placements increasing by 31 percent between 2012 and 2016. In fact, the UAE is one of the top 15 input destinations for international student placements in the USA, UK and Australia. For UAE students, a top-quality foreign education is increasingly seen as a means of improving employment prospects.

With English recognised as a gateway skill for future careers, the British Council hopes the IELTS prize and various English development programmes will help improve academic prospects for students in the UAE.

Deep Adhikari, Director – Exams, Gulf South at the British Council UAE said, “We are confident the IELTS prize will support our IELTS candidates to achieve their higher education dreams and life goals in the UAE or abroad. We are committed to providing youth with the English language skills they need for the future. Learners can now benefit from a host of initiatives by the British Council to support and improve their English proficiency so this is no longer a barrier to entry for achieving their academic or employment ambitions.”

The IELTS test has never been more accessible, with the British Council providing the largest network of computer delivered testing centres across the UAE with 12 venues.
